Ground covers don’t get much sweeter than this. Viola hederacea or Native Violet is a perennial ground cover that delights with its tiny mauve and white blooms held on delicate stems above the foliage. Pretty and petite, its round evergreen leaves blanket the ground for year-round coverage and its blooms continue even through the cooler months. Native to Australia, this species is easy to grow and is not invasive like European varieties.
Growing Conditions:
Viola hederacea is extremely versatile thriving in most aspects, shade to sun. However, it will produce more abundant flowers with greater sunlight exposure. To encourage a dense mat, we recommend planting 30cm apart in well-draining soil. This low-growing species can spread up to a metre wide and reach 15cm tall. It’s also easy to propagate by division, making it ideal for mass planting.
Care & Maintenance:
Viola is a low-maintenance plant, but it benefits from additional watering during the warmer months to keep the soil consistently moist. A light application of fertiliser in spring will help promote a more prolific display of blooms. If violas are looking tired, a hard cut back will enable them to regenerate beautifully.
In a garden:
Viola hederacea suits many garden styles from native, to traditional and contemporary. Hardy and versatile, it can be used as a lawn substitute or filler between pavers, under hedges or in mixed border plantings surrounding topiary and small shrubs. One of its great qualities is the ability to blend beautifully with companion plants, enhancing the overall display without overpowering it.
Fun fact: The delicate flowers are edible and make a charming garnish for desserts or salads.
