Rhaphiolepis indica ‘Oriental Pearl’, is an evergreen shrub with attractive glossy, rounded foliage. Commonly known as the ‘Oriental Pearl’ Indian Hawthorn, Rhaphiolepis originates from East Asia, including regions such as southern China, Japan, and Korea. From spring through to autumn, it produces an abundance of fragrant white blossoms. Suited to warmer climates, this shrub is not only ornamental, but also a hardy species and relatively low maintenance.
Growing Conditions:
Tolerant of heat, frost and salt spray, this hardy shrub prefers a full sun to part shade position in a temperate climate. The Oriental Pearl has a rounded compact growth habit and reaches a mature height of 60cm-1m and the same in width. For best results, plant in sandy, well-drained soil.
Care & Maintenance:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep and extensive roots, then reduce the frequency. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage blossoms. Lightly prune Rhaphiolepsis after flowering to maintain shape and promote new growth.
In a garden:
Rhaphiolepis’ low-growing habit and salt tolerance make it a great plant for coastal gardens and surrounding saltwater pools.
