Of all the deciduous trees you can’t go past the heart-shaped leaves of a Cercis Canadensis. They scream “love me”, and we do, especially when they turn from deep crimson to a brilliant amber in autumn.

Commonly known as the ‘Forest Pansy’, this small to medium-sized ornamental tree is ever-changing with the seasons. In spring, it produces clusters of small pink flowers before sprouting its rich purple leaves that transform to green over summer. Native to North America, the Cercis Canadensis belongs to the Fabaceae family, also including peas and beans!

Growing Conditions:

Cercis Canadensis is best positioned in full sun to part shade. It requires moist, well-draining soil but is sensitive to prolonged wet conditions.

Care & Maintenance:

Once established, the Forest Pansy is very low maintenance. It will benefit from the application of fertiliser in late winter or early spring, preceding the emergence of new growth.

In a garden:

A stunning compact tree, the Cercis Canadensis is suitable for many settings. Whether as a potted feature tree, in a courtyard, or planted in a spacious garden bed, its uses are limitless.
